More than seven hundred members from across the state attended the weekend conference, which featured continuing education sessions, governance and public policy discussions, and work on behalf of the Minnesota Veterinary Medicine Foundation, which is governed by members of the MVMA. The Foundation provides scholarships to veterinary and technician students, grants to research efforts and to related groups such as 4H and Minnesota Future Farmers of America. The Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians held their meeting concurrently.
Dr. Baillie took over the presidency at a Friday luncheon which was attended by representatives of the national American Veterinary Medical Association, the president of the American Animal Hospital Association, and other visiting dignitaries. "I'm honored to take my turn as leader of an organization that serves veterinary medicine and includes so many skilled and caring colleagues. The MVMA works closely with the national organization, and other state associations in the Midwest. I attended a national leadership conference in January in Chicago, and had the pleasure of discussing the future of veterinary medicine in Minnesota and the United States with counterparts from across the country."
"My goals during my year's tenure are to increase membership in our organization, particularly for students and teachers, so that our profession can continue to serve and enhance the health of the pets and animals of the state of Minnesota, and to continue the good work our organization has done since its founding. Our ties with the AVMA are important, and so is our relationship with the College of Veterinary Medicine."
Dr. Baillie is entering the third year of a four-year leadership cycle, having already served as vice-president and president-elect of the MVMA.
In 2012, Dr. Baillie became a Lifetime Member of the MVMA, having joined the association shortly after his graduation from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972. A well-attended alumni event from the College was also held during the MVMA conference.
